The Assist: Get ready for another decisive weekend

We check-in on The Powercube, Harry Kane's quest for a trophy, and a wild Championship final day ahead

Welcome to another weekend where plenty will be decided as a number of European leagues reach either a dramatic conclusion, or a season-defining moment. The final day of the EFL Championship looks mental. Bayern are set to win the Bundesliga without Harry Kane. And Xherdan Shaqiri has boyhood club Basel back on top in Switzerland.

Chelsea vs. Liverpool

The Reds have won the Premier League. That’s done. The three relegation places have also been decided. So with four rounds still left to play, attention now turns to the battle for European qualification.

Remember, now finishing in the top five will guarantee you a place in the Champions League next season. And after Brentford’s surprise win at Nottingham Forest on Thursday night, Chelsea are the side who currently hold that fifth place, sitting above Forest on goal difference, and thankful to their West London neighbours for the favour.

The Blues now face Liverpool on Sunday, and after the formality of giving the champions a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge, Enzo Maresca’s side must go about ending a 10-game winless run (all competitions) against the Merseyside club.

RB Leipzig vs. Bayern Munich

In Germany, the Bundesliga could well be decided this weekend. Bayern Munich will retake the title they unexpectedly lost to Bayer Leverkusen last season should they win at RB Leipzig on Saturday. Even if they lose, they could still return to Bavaria triumphant if Leverkusen go on to drop points at Freiburg on Sunday.

Vincent Kompany’s side currently hold an eight point lead with three to play. It’s been an impressive debut campaign for the former Man City defender who’s overseen an offensive unit that has scored a league-high 2.9 goals per game while their defence has conceded just 0.9 goals on average (also the best figure in the league).

Oft-mocked for his lack of career honours, Harry Kane has provided 24 goals and seven assists to the title charge, but he won’t be able to contribute at fifth placed Leipzig tomorrow. That’s because he received a needless fifth yellow card of the season last weekend at Mainz and will consequently serve a one-match ban.

We hope he finally gets his hands on the trophy one way or the other!

Lecce vs. Napoli

We hinted at Inter Milan’s faltering Serie A challenge in last weekend’s edition, and their consequent defeat to Claudio Ranieri’s Roma left the door wide open for Napoli to seize the initiative.

The Neopolitans did just that, thanks to Scott McTominay’s game-winning brace against Torino. The Scotsman now has five goals in an inspired three-match run that has helped move Napoli three points clear of Inter at the top of the table.

This weekend, Antonio Conte and his team travel to Lecce. Kicking off before Inter’s clash with Verona later Saturday evening, Napoli have the chance to double the points margin.

Lecce are currently sat 17th, just two points and one place above the drop zone, and are desperate for a result. They find themselves on a 11-game winless run that dates back to late January.

With Inter perhaps slightly distracted by the prospect of a second epic contest with Barcelona is coming up in the Champions League, the time is now for Napoli to press their advantage. The dream of a fourth Scudetto in the club’s history is becoming a reality.

After Athletic Club’s intense Europa League battle with Manchester United at San Mamés, the Bilbao team visits the Anoeta this Sunday with their minds set on the league.

The derbies between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad are always marked in red on the calendar, and the festive atmosphere fills the streets with color and music in what is known as the "fiesta del fútbol vasco" (the Basque football festival), largely due to the friendly atmosphere between the two sets of fans.

In addition to the fans meeting up in the stands, both teams are playing for a place in Europe on the pitch — the Leones are looking to secure a spot in next season's Champions League, and Real Sociedad aim to qualify for European competition for the sixth year running.

As if that weren't enough, Sunday's match will be the final derby for Athletic legend Óscar de Marcos, who will hang up his boots at the end of the season after more than 550 games for the club. Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil will also say goodbye in June after almost seven years in charge of the "txuri-urdin".

The 24 clubs in England’s second tier have been going at it since early August but now, 46 games later, the majority of them will have their season defined by what happens on Saturday lunchtime.

At the top, Leeds United and Burnley have already been promoted to the Premier League but there’s still the small matter of the league title to be decided.

Below them, Sheffield United and Sunderland are assured of the play-offs, but five further sides will fight it out for the last two postseason places. Just two points separate Coventry City in sixth down to Middlesbrough in ninth - the fact that those two play each other further complicates matters!

At the bottom, Cardiff City were relegated last week. Plymouth will need a miracle to avoid joining them as they must beat Leeds and hope for a 16-goal swing in goal difference. After that, another five sides are scrabbling for the required result that keeps them out of the final place in the drop zone. Again, two of the sides involved play each other - Derby County and Stoke City.

All the remaining games kick off at the same time and with nearly every one of them having something riding on it, we recommend that you keep your FotMob app on the live table view and keep on refreshing the screen!

FC Basel haven’t won the Swiss Super League since the 2016/17 season, and last season’s eighth-placed finish was an abomination for the second most successful side in the country’s history.

Something needed to change this season. And coach Fabio Celestini certainly rolled the dice, taking a gamble on signing a 33-year-old Xherdan Shaqiri, who had struggled to make an impact over two seasons in MLS with Chicago Fire.

But that doesn’t tell the full story. Before Chicago. Before Lyon, Liverpool, Stoke, Inter, and Bayern Munich before that, Xherdan Shaqiri was a Basel boy. This was a homecoming. A chance to give something back to the club where it all started for the boy who moved to Switzerland with his family as an immigrant in the early 1990s.

And Shaqiri has certainly helped Basel get back on top this season. Fourteen goals and 17 assists in the Super League - his best ever return - sees them head into the weekend six points clear of nearest challengers Servette with five games to play. Which makes Sunday’s meeting with Servette a virtual title decider.

Following his goal in the Copa Del Final win over Clásico rivals Real Madrid, Graham Ruthven took a look at the young midfielder’s transformation under Hansi Flick this season. This lad is something special.

As detailed earlier, Bayern Munich are on the verge of reclaiming what they see as their rightful place back on top of the Bundesliga. But just how good have they been in Vincent Kompany’s first year at the helm?

The guys at thisisanfield.com summarize the major reasons why Liverpool have won the Premier league title this season, and it starts with the squad doing a lot less running.
