Arsenal have won the Premier League but who will qualify for Europe? Who will avoid the drop? And what’s still up for grabs elsewhere? This week’s newsletter wraps up a whole lot of unfinished business.

Will Spurs or West Ham survive the drop?

Tuesday night’s results were sickening for Spurs fans. Not only did they miss the chance to confirm their Premier League safety - by losing away to Chelsea - they also had to suffer the indignity of watching their North London rivals end their 22-year wait for a title.

But, with a two-point advantage over West Ham, Spurs might not even have to win their home game against Everton to stay up. Which could be decisive, considering they have only won two league games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.

But should Spurs lose, it gives West Ham the opportunity to mount an unlikely great escape. While Spurs’ stumble against Chelsea gave Hammers fans hope heading into the final day, West Ham now have to go and get all three points against Leeds United, a team that has beaten them both in the league this season and in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

The battle for European places

The top three places in the Premier League are confirmed - Arsenal, Man City, Man United, in that order - but who else qualifies for the Champions League, the Europa League, and the Conference League is what will captivate us on Sunday.

Much hinges on where Aston Villa finish. Currently sat fourth but with Champions League football guaranteed by virtue of their Europa League triumph, there is little incentive in shaking off their Istanbul hangovers to get a result away to Man City.

Should they slip to fifth, England’s UEFA coefficient means a sixth Champions League place is on offer. Bournemouth currently occupy that position, a team that has never played in Europe before and was in the fourth tier as recently as 2009.

The Cherries face a trip to Nottingham Forest on the final day but will need to keep an eye on Brighton’s game against Manchester United, with their South Coast rivals the only side who could take their place.

Below that, two from Brighton, Chelsea, Brentford, and Sunderland will make the Europa League, and all the sides down to 13th placed Fulham are, mathematically at least, fighting over the one slot available in the Conference League.

The Spygate furore that has upended the Championship playoffs will come to a dramatic conclusion this weekend.

After being caught spying on Middlesbrough training ahead of the semi-final, Southampton were tossed out of the final for multiple breaches of EFL regulations.

Saints’ fans are upset, Saints’ players are distraught, and Hull aren’t happy about having to prepare to face different opposition at such short notice. Nevertheless, the final will take place.

So now, Hull City take on Middlesbrough in a final dubbed “football’s richest game.”

Hull and Middlesbrough were relegated together the last time that both featured in England’s top flight (2016/17), but which club will take the opportunity to return to the promised land?

Coupe De France Final

Tonight’s showpiece game in France’s oldest Cup competition features two teams nursing their wounds after a bruising end to the Ligue 1 campaign.

RC Lens have been the surprise story in French football, pushing European champions PSG all the way to the penultimate game of the season, when a 2-0 win for Luis Enrique’s side confirmed the title on Lens’ home ground. In the end, Lens finished six points down in second.

A cup final win would at least give coach Pierre Sage and his squad something tangible for their efforts.

At the other end of the table, Nice, who’ve been a top flight club consistently since 2001, could have escaped the relegation playoff place on the final day of the season. Instead, the INEOS-owned could only draw against bottom side Metz and now face the bizarre prospect of playing this final while they are preparing for a two-legged playoff (against second tier Saint Etienne) that decides their Ligue 1 future.

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich motored to the Bundesliga title, sealing the deal with a win over Stuttgart in mid-April.

The two now meet again in the season-ending DFB Pokal Final. For Bayern, it’s a first final appearance since 2020, and therefore the first chance to win a domestic double in six years.

Harry Kane could even break the 60-goal mark if he manages to find the net on at least two occasions, something he’s done in 16 games already this term.

The champions might not have it all their own way though, Stuttgart are the current holders in this competition, they finished fourth in the league, and in Deniz Undav, they have a prolific goalscorer of their own.

Famously, Juventus’ city rivalry with Torino is one of the most one sided derbies in World football. Since FotMob has been collecting stats for Italian football (2012), Juventus have won 21 of the 29 meetings between the two, losing just once back in 2015.

Going even further back, the H2H record stands at one win in 41 attempts for Torino. But if there was ever a time to change that unwanted statistic, it would be in this weekend’s final round of Serie A fixtures. Doing so would ruin Juve’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Juventus slipped to sixth in the table following defeat to Fiorentina last time out but they are level on points with Como above them, and in touching distance of fourth placed Roma and Milan in third.

The Old Lady need to finish in the top four to guarantee a seat at Europe’s top table, meaning only a win, combined with defeat for one of those three sides above them will do.

Friday: Aside from the Coupe De France final detailed above, there’s also silverware on offer in Türkiye, where Trabzonspor, who finished third in the league, start the Cup final as favourites against Konyaspor. And in the always-entertaining League of Ireland, leaders Shamrock Rovers kickoff a double header with a game against Sligo Rovers before they go on to face Dublin rivals Bohemians when the next round of games start on Monday.

Saturday: After the drama of last weekend’s league finale, Celtic will attempt to complete a domestic double when they take on second tier Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup Final. Down under, the A-League Grand Final pits New Zealander upstarts Auckland FC, playing just their second season as a club, against Sydney, the league’s most successful team. In the Women’s Champions League, record winners Lyon meet Barcelona in the final for the fourth time in the last eight seasons. Barcelona’s men’s team round off their league programme at Valencia. Hansi Flick’s side could still reach 97 points, a total that would surpass the great Pep Guardiola side of 2010/11 that won LaLiga and the Champions League. Staying in Spain, there’s still the small matter of two relegation places to be decided in LaLiga. Five teams remain at risk, but Girona’s game against Elche is the most intriguing, with whoever loses that one guaranteed to go down.

Sunday: South African side Mamelodi Sundowns will defend a 1-0 lead as they travel to Morocco’s AS Far for the second leg of the CAF Champions League Final. And back at Wembley Stadium, the League One final follows Saturday’s Championship decider, with Bolton Wanderers facing Stockport County.
